In honor and memory of Lance

Unwritten.org was born out of love and loss, in honor of Lance Kerman — a man whose life, though marked by struggle, left an indelible impact on everyone who knew him.

Unwritten is dedicated to providing essential resources like housing, transportation, clothing, and government identification for those like Lance who are in recovery and reentry programs.

Thanks to the generous contributions of Lance's parents, Mark and Lucy, we are able to honor Lance's legacy through our work with every life we help in the future.

Lance's legacy

A Life Full of Love and Light

On an ordinary day, we lost an extraordinary man. Our son, Lance Kerman, was 37 years old when he passed away from fentanyl poisoning. On that day, our lives changed forever, and we lost not only our son but also the love and light of our world.

Lance was a remarkable person with a spark that could brighten any room. There was always a twinkle in his eye, a sign of his mischievous humor and deep passion for life. He had an uncanny ability to make anyone he met feel like they had known him forever. Lance was the kind of person who became your friend the moment you met him. His warm smile, big heart, and sharp wit made him unforgettable to anyone fortunate enough to cross his path.

Lance loved many things—animals, traveling, computers, and sports. Some of our most cherished memories are of trips we took together, filled with laughter and unforgettable adventures. He was a dedicated fan of University of Louisville basketball, and his passion for the game was contagious.

As our only child, Lance held a special place in our hearts. Our relationship with him was built on love, laughter, and unwavering support. He brought us so much pride and joy throughout his life.

Substance use disorder entered Lance’s life later, around the age of 30. He fought it with everything he had, demonstrating immense courage and determination. Lance wanted so much more for himself and those he loved. His battle against addiction was a testament to his strength and resilience, but it also revealed the heartbreaking toll of this terrible disease.

Addiction is a thief—it steals memories, families, and lives. It robbed us of our beloved Lance, and we miss him more than words can express. Yet, even in our grief, we hold on to hope. We hope that others battling substance use disorder can find recovery. We hope that families won’t have to endure the pain of losing a child or loved one.

If Lance were here today, he would have a message to share: Drugs and those who pass them out are not your friends. Drugs are thieves of memories, families, and worst of all, lives.

Our son’s life was full of love, laughter, and light. He left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. As his parents, we will continue to cherish every memory, every laugh, and every moment we shared with him.

In honoring Lance, we also honor the countless others lost to substance use disorder. We hope that by sharing his story, we can inspire others to seek help, embrace recovery, and celebrate the incredible value of life. Lance’s light may no longer shine here on Earth, but his love will remain in our hearts forever. Your life is worth so much more—and so was Lance’s.
